When it comes to fishing, your success will be determined by two things - your skill and your gear. While fishing skills are something which you can only acquire through many hours of practice and learning, gear is another matter. By investing in high-quality fishing equipment, you can increase the chances that you will land a good catch. Below is a guide to 3 things you should consider when buying fishing gear.

The Length and Load Capacity

When looking at fishing rods in your local store, you may notice that the majority of them of them have numbers written on the side. These numbers tell you the length of that particular rod. Below this number is another number which is the load capacity of the rod. The load capacity refers to the max weight of fish which the rod is designed to carry. For example, if the load capacity of a rod is 5 kilos, it is designed to handle a fish of that weight. However, if you attempt to use a 5 kilos rod to reel in a 7 kilo fish, the rod may break as it cannot handle the excess load. If you are unsure of the best length and load capacity for your needs, you should speak with a sales assistant in the fishing supply shop.

The Balance

When considering which type of reel to invest in, you should consider the balance between the reel and the rod. Ideally, you should choose a reel which matches the weight capacity of your rod. For example, if your rod has a weight capacity of 7 kilos, you should purchase a reel which can deal with between 4 and 8 kilos. If the rod and reel are unbalanced, you will have real problems getting your fish out of the water.

A Mechanical or Electrical Reel

You will also need to decide between electrical and mechanical reels. Electrical reels are perfect if you plan to catch large fish from the deep sea as you will be able to bring them in without battling against the weight of the fish. However, if you are planning to fish on a lake or canal for smaller fish, you may enjoy using a mechanical reel.
